Hailed the “King of Wines” and regarded as the “wine of kings”, Barolo is a celebrated Italian wine and one of the nation’s most strictly regulated. In 2014, vineyards in Barolo and Barbaresco made it onto the UNESCO World Heritage List, with a bottle from the estates costing up to HK$10,000. Meanwhile, because they have yet to be commercially cultivated and have a limited harvesting season, white truffles have been likened to diamonds. They can only be found in Italy and a handful of neighbouring countries, plus the ancient town of Alba near Barolo and Barbaresco. Every November, the Alba White Truffle fair draws connoisseurs from the world over: in 2007, late Hong Kong tycoon Stanley Ho made headlines when he purchased a 1.3-kilogram Italian white truffle for US$330,000.
